The Hot Dip Galvanizing process has been around for one hundred and fifty years. The process is a means of protecting steel against corrosion. Protecting is by means of coating the steel work with zinc. The process is carried out by cleaning the material in hydrochloric acid to ensure a chemically clean surface. Steel work is then fully immersed into a tank containing liquid zinc held and controlled at 450 deg. C. The zinc reacts with the steel surface which forms a series of zinc iron alloy layers which are metallurgically bonded to the steel substrate. This gives a coating which even when damaged in small areas, will provide an impenetrable protective layer to the steel substrate.

The physical size of the galvanizing bath is 5.5m long, 1.5m wide and 2.8m deep making it the widest in Scotland. Individual weigh of material which can be handled is 1.4 tonnes. Forfar Galvanisers also have a closed acid bath in an enclosed room in heated acid tanks, whereas most are open helping us increase safety for both the environment and our staff.

ISO Accreditation

Forfar Galvanising conforms to ISO 1461:2009 (Hot Dipped Galvanizing) ISO 1461:2009 specifies the general properties of coatings and test methods for coatings applied by dipping fabricated iron and steel articles (including certain castings) in a zinc melt (containing not more than 2 % of other metals). It does not apply to the following:

  • sheet, wire and woven or welded mesh products that are continuously hot dip galvanized;
  • tube and pipe that are hot dip galvanized in automatic plants;
  • hot dip galvanized products (e.g. fasteners) for which specific standards exist and which might include additional requirements or requirements which are different from those of ISO 1461:2009.

Dipping Guidelines

Our hot dip galvanising bath measures 5.5 m long by 1.5 mwide by 2.8 metres deep which enables us to galvanise an array of items in an assortment of sizes.

Special considerations have to be made to the sizes of items galvanised, due to items being galvanised on an angle we cannot dip items that are the full 5.5m in width.

The maximum sizes that can be galvanised are as follows:

  • 5m length (railing) x 1.3m width
  • 5.3m length (structural) x 1.3m width
  • both with a maximum dipping depth of 2m.

If you have any larger items that need galvanising please contact us for advice.
